Frequently asked questions

38 answers to the questions people ask most, from installing to roundabouts to Team Create.

General

What is Wayline Studio?

Wayline Studio is a modern map editor for OMSI 2, the bus simulator. You can open existing maps or start new ones, draw roads and junctions, build roundabouts, shape AI traffic paths, create bus routes and timetables, place scenery, and export your work as a map OMSI can load.

Is it free?

Yes. Wayline Studio is free to download and use. It's open-source software under the GNU Affero General Public Licence v3. See Licence & credits.

Is Wayline Studio finished?

No. It's an in-development build and you should expect bugs. Keep backups of anything you care about. Wayline never overwrites the original map, but it's still good practice.

Is this an official OMSI product?

No. Wayline Studio is an independent fan project. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by the developers or publishers of OMSI 2. OMSI 2 isn't included and must be bought separately.

Why the British bus theme?

Because a lot of us build British maps. That's why roundabouts default to clockwise, pavements get UK-style dropped kerbs, road generation checks OS Open Roads in Great Britain, and there are Ordnance Survey maps and terrain options built in.

Download & install

What do I need to run it?

Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), an installed copy of OMSI 2, and a graphics card that can run Unity 6 games. You only need an internet connection for satellite imagery, terrain heights, road generation and Team Create.

Does the installer need administrator rights?

No. It installs just for your Windows user, so no admin prompt appears.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC". Is it safe?

The setup isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't recognise it. Click More info → Run anyway. To be sure the file hasn't been altered, compare its SHA-256 checksum with the one on the download page. More help.

How do I update?

Download the newest setup from the download page and run it. It installs over the old version, and your projects and settings are kept. Don't accept update offers inside the editor in testing builds. They point at the upstream project.

How do I uninstall it?

Go to Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, choose Wayline Studio and select Uninstall. Your projects and maps stay.

Can I run it on Mac or Linux?

Not officially. It's built for Windows, like OMSI 2 itself.

Maps & editing

Will it damage my existing maps?

No. Edits go into a Wayline project and export to a separate map folder. The original map is never edited in place.

Can I start a brand-new map?

Yes. Choose New map. It doesn't need a template or a global.cfg, and you can add tiles as it grows.

Can I trace real streets?

Yes. Place the map on the Earth in Satellite and terrain and lay pictures over the tiles. Esri World Imagery and official orthophotos need no key. Mapbox, MapTiler and Ordnance Survey maps work with your own key. You can even generate a tile's roads from OpenStreetMap. How.

Do I need to buy any API keys?

No. Esri imagery, orthophotos, AWS terrain tiles and OpenStreetMap data need no key. Keys are optional, for providers like Mapbox, MapTiler or the OS Data Hub, and many have free tiers.

Can I use objects and road types from my OMSI installation?

Yes. Wayline reads everything installed in your OMSI 2 folder. Hide DLC objects helps you avoid add-on content other players might not own.

Can I import my own 3D models?

Yes. Zip up an .x or .o3d model with its textures, or a complete OMSI object folder, and use Import your own object (.zip)…. Full guide.

Roads, junctions & roundabouts

How do I make a T junction?

Start your road outside the main road and finish on it, with Make junctions on. Wayline cuts the road and builds an OMSI junction with AI paths. Details.

How do I make a crossroads?

Make a T junction, then draw the opposite road onto the junction, anywhere on it out to the ends of its arms. It becomes a four-way junction. Details.

My road kinks or swerves into the junction. What can I do?

Since 2.9.1, the junction sits exactly where you joined the road, and its main arms follow the road's course, so this should be much rarer. If you still see it, give the approach a little more room, or split the road with N nearer the junction. Please report it with a screenshot.

How do I add an exit to a roundabout?

Draw your road onto the ring. The roundabout rebuilds with your new entry exactly where you clicked. For full control, use the roundabout editor. Details.

Can I choose exactly where every roundabout exit goes?

Yes. Edit → Roundabout editor…, click the ring, then add, drag and turn entries, or press Line up with nearby roads. Apply builds it in one undo step. Guide.

Are roundabouts clockwise?

Yes, by default, as in the UK. You can switch the direction when placing one.

AI buses cut across the kerb at a corner. Can I fix it?

Yes. In the Lanes tool (L), drag the small circle in the middle of the turn outwards to make it wider. How.

Can I make my own road types?

Yes. The road builder lets you put a road together from lanes, including bus lanes, cycle lanes, parking, pavements and medians, and save it as a real OMSI spline. Guide.

Bus routes

Can I create bus routes and timetables?

Yes. The Route builder places stops, draws the route between them and writes the line, trip and departures into the map's timetable. Guide.

Can I change the bus stop sign it uses?

Yes. Pick any stop sign or shelter from your installation, or use any object you've chosen in Objects. Details.

Can I edit a route after creating it?

Yes. Load any trip from the map's timetable under Edit existing route, change it and save it in place, or delete it. Details.

Team Create

What is Team Create?

Live multiplayer map editing. Several people edit one map at once, and changes appear for everyone in about a second. Read more.

Can anyone join my team project?

Only people who have your invite code. Only share it with people you trust. Creating a team project is at your own risk during testing. As the owner, you can kick, ban, or generate a new code at any time.

Is my password safe?

Your password itself is never stored. The server keeps only a salted PBKDF2-SHA256 hash. Login tokens are also stored only as hashes and expire after 30 days. Details.

I forgot my password. Can it be reset?

Not yet. Password reset and email verification aren't available during testing. Your email address is stored, so these features can be added later without you needing a new account.

Where's the Team Create server address?

It's private during testing and isn't published. Testers get builds that already know where to connect.

What happens if two people edit the same spot?

Changes are merged per tile. If two people save the same tile within the same second, the later save wins for that tile. Different tiles never conflict.

Legal & licence

Can I share maps I've made with Wayline Studio?

Your maps are your own work. But if they use third-party scenery or road types, you must follow each author's terms. Some creators don't allow redistribution.

Where can I get the source code?

Wayline Studio is licensed under AGPL-3.0, so you're entitled to its source code. See Licence & credits for how to request it.

Does the website track me?

No. There are no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, processes standard request data to deliver and protect it. Privacy notice.
